Федеральное агентство в структуре в структуре Министерства финансов [Department of the Treasury, U.S.], частично подотчетна Министерству национальной безопасности [Department of Homeland Security, U.S.] (с января 2003). Основана в 1865 для борьбы с фальшивомонетчиками, но уже в начальный период деятельности занималась также борьбой с контрабандой, вымогательством, террористическими актами Ку-клукс-клана [Ku Klux Klan], а с 1901, после убийства президента У. Маккинли [McKinley, William], ей поручена охрана президентов США [President, U.S.]. Во время двух мировых войн занималась также расследованием случаев саботажа на производстве и при транспортировке продукции стратегического значения. Ныне в функции службы кроме охраны действующего президента входит охрана вновь избранного президента [president elect], вице-президента [Vice-President, U.S.] и членов их семей, а также основных кандидатов на пост президента и вице-президента, экс-президентов и их супруг, вдов экс-президентов до вступления в повторный брак, детей экс-президентов до наступления 16-летнего возраста, высших официальных лиц иностранных государств во время их визитов в США, а по указанию президента и специальных представителей США в зарубежных поездках. Охраняет Белый дом [White House] и временные резиденции президента, дипломатические представительства иностранных государств в США. В ее функции входит также борьба с хищением государственного имущества и подделкой государственных ценных бумаг США и иностранных государств, предотвращение махинаций в некоторых видах ссудо-сберегательных учреждений, борьба с иными финансовыми преступлениями. Имеет отделения [District Office] в 115 городах США, а также отделения при посольствах США [Distict Offices Overseas] в Бангкоке, Бонне, Лондоне, Маниле, Париже и Риме. После убийства президента Дж. Кеннеди [Kennedy, John Fitzgerald (JFK)] Комиссия Уоррена [Warren Commission] рекомендовала модернизировать Службу, в результате чего у нее прибавилось несколько подразделений и был увеличен бюджет.
